It seems like every time I check my email someone new to the business is asking about what they need to set-up a pilot car for service..... as you will see it depends on where you are located and where you call your working area so I will just concentrate on the main things that every pilot car should have in most US states...... This is only meant to get you going and I am sure you will find I have left out some items because this would turn into a book and we don't want that. First you need a good running pilot car (most use pick-ups) that you can depend on so you don't break down.... then you need your lights ( I have two rotating beacons with 2 lights in each totaling 4 ) and the mounting depends on your over size load sign placement some states require top 2 sided sign and some bumper signs on the front and back and once you find out your working area you can decide..... ok you need a ten pound fire extinguisher or 2 five pound extinguishers... next a hand held stop and slow paddle and lets not forget the orange hard hat, orange safety vest, hand held flashlight, about a dozen 18" red flags (Utah and Massachusetts require 24"), three 24" orange cones (I also carry six 18" cones), 9 flares, three 18" two sided triangles... (I carry 6 myself), budgie cords, a good CB radio and a spare CB (my spare is a 40 channel hand held), two over size load banners for the load if needed, small first aid kit, if you are going to do high pole then you will need a good non-conductive highpole that will not slip down, 30ft tape measure ( I also made a telescoping stick to measure bridges), also you may need a non-conductive pole to lift wires on some moves, duct tape, any tool that you could need to keep your pilot car going..... Signs name city and state 2" letters or bigger.... now there is more but this should get you started so I would ask other drivers in your area and I am sure they will add to this list of safety equipment for your pilot car. Some states require Certifications and some require permits like Nevada requires a light permit.
